Snowshoeing is a fun winter recreation activity whose popularity has stayed strong since its inception and right up through today. Its also a popular and easy way to get around in snowbound areas during the winter. Nowadays there are many types of snowshoes for many types of activities. Heres a rundown of each type to help you choose the right snowshoes for your lifestyle and activity. The three main types of snowshoes are: Running & Aerobic Style These snowshoes were built with lighter weight materials than normal snowshoes to allow for faster movement. They also feature an extra cleat or cleats for additional traction while you are running or walking fast. Also the bindings will allow for you to insert running or athletic shoes so they lace up and cradle as well. There are actually snowshoe races and this is the type of snowshoe that is used in that type of race. This type of snowshoe is right for anyone who will need to move fast or just wants to walk around their town. These are not appropriate for snowshoeing in rugged terrain.
Modern snowshoes usually have an aluminum or stainless steel frame and neoprene/nylon or polypropylene decking; the toe is generally tilted upward to allow for easier maneuverability. In order to work as intended snowshoes must not be allowed to accumulate snow on the tops. This is usually prevented by use of a latticework which allows any snow to fall through the snowshoe. Some snowshoes use no latticework having a solid plastic decking; however these models do not appear to have a problem with accumulated snow. If they did they would not be as popular as they are. Many modern snowshoes also incorporate crampons which are essentially spikes that protrude from the bottoms of the shoes. Crampons help with mountaineering and glacier travel providing additional traction in snow and ice.
Snowshoes as the name implies are footwears for walking over snow. Snowshoes distribute the weight of a person over a larger area so that the persons foot does not sink completely into the snow. Traditional snowshoes are made of heavy hardwood frame with leather lacings. Modern high-tech snowshoes are made of light metal such as aluminum and alloy or even of plastic. These modern snowshoes are raised at the toe for maneuverability and are generally smaller than the traditional snowshoes. Racing snowshoes and gliding snowshoes are just some examples of modern snowshoes used for movement in deep snow. Snowshoes were used some 6000 years ago as an earliest form of transportation.
Fitness. Snowshoe walking is more difficult than walking on a cleared surface but it is also as hard as you want to make it. Start gradually and progress to a more challenging pace as you get more miles on your snowshoes. Every workout should begin with a gradual warm-up and finish with a cool down to avoid injuries or soreness. End your adventure with a few stretches for the legs hips and arms before hopping back into your car. Where to Go Safely. You can pretty much snowshoe anyplace that you can hike. Check your local tourism office or hiking club for ideas to get you started. Stick to well known snowshoeing trails and always snowshoe with a buddy for safety reasons.
