Todays snowshoes are shorter and narrower than the wide-bodied wood framed snowshoes of old. They feature a lightweight aluminum frame and a special decking. With the easy-to-use flexible binding and crampons on the bottom to prevent slipping snow shoeing today can be a walk in the park. The beauty of snowshoeing is that nearly anyone can do it. If you can walk you can snow shoe. Snowshoe running is a different variety. This fast growing sport is a superb cross-training activity for runners and other active people during the winter months. With less impact than road running snowshoe running is a great way to strengthen the muscles of the legs and core without having to pound the pavement.
Working with rawhide. You just received this hard stiff piece of rawhide and are wondering how in the heck do I get this soft enough to use. I have received many calls from clients asking how to best rehydrate the rawhide. Finally I decided to just write it down and put it on our web site. Rawhide Lace: The best way I have found to relax rawhide lace is to place the entire bundle in lukewarm water let me repeat t hat LUKEWARM WATER! A small child should be able place their hand in it without whining! Hot water will destroy the tissue in rawhide and you will have gelatin. Leave the bundle overnight if you even think you might leave it longer than 12 hours add some pinesol or a bit of bleach to the water usually a cup of pinesol or a couple oz.
There are two kinds of snowshoe bindings: limited rotation and free rotation. With limited rotation the toe is not permitted below the level of the decking; with free rotation it is. Both types utilize straps to fasten the foot to the snowshoe. These straps are fastened so that the lose ends are on the outsides of the feet. This prevents the wearer from stepping on them. Snowshoeing is extremely beneficial exercise especially since they allow people to get outdoors when it would otherwise be impossible. Snowshoes also have the added benefit of being quite environmentally friendly. A snowshoer is able to pass through his or her surroundings while making virtually no impact adverse or otherwise. Snowshoes even allow skiers and snowboarders to access hills they would otherwise be unable to get to. As a result many winter sports enthusiasts have adopted snowshoes as a complimentary sport one that allows them to practice their main pastime in new and different surroundings.
One of the important aspects of snowshoes is good flotation which prevents them from tiring out prematurely. Quality snowshoes will have a good hinge that pivots correctly to prevent the tail of the snowshoe from lifting. This leads to good flotation. You also want to be able to have good control of your snowshoes. With any of the quality snowshoes on the market this should never be an issue. If you are into winter outdoor activities you are also going to have a need for ice cleats. Again it is worth taking the time to choose the types of cleats that are more applicable to the outdoor activities you plan on participating in. For example one big benefit of using ice cleats is the ability to prevent the wear and tear that is often created on your ski boots. These are inexpensive items and well worth the investment.
