Most snowshoes today are made of lightweight materials like aluminum so finding lightweight snowshoes should not be difficult. Steel toe claws are an absolute necessity for going up or down hills. Poles are more of a personal preference. Some snowshoe kits come with poles. However if you have to buy poles separately you might want to wait and see if you really need them. If you or your children have difficulty with balance or coordination then poles are a good idea otherwise poles are probably not necessary. One last aspect to consider is the size of the snowshoe. Basically the area of one snowshoe in square inches should equal your weight in pounds. Your weight includes you and the all the gear or equipment you will be wearing or carrying.
Cleats are the teeth present at the bottom of the shoes that provide traction and allow for more confident stepping. Kids snowshoes are not limited just to kids; they can be used by anyone weighing less than 80 pounds and of shorter height. Kids snowshoes can also be used by children for off trail hiking on golf courses in packed trails etc. A low impact workout with a pair of snowshoes provides many health benefits. Snowshoes can be used by folks of all ages who enjoy a winter snowfall while walking running jumping or climbing. Snowshoes are great fun to use in any type of snow conditions.
This is the best way to fully relax rawhide. It does not ruin the machine or the hide. Just dont use hot water! Once the skin is soft enough close the lid and let the wash machine go through its cycles on a cold rinse. If your machine is not big enough go to the local Laundromat and use the commercial machine. People will look at you funny tell them it is a new type of material used to deflect bullets and is being considered for use by the military. On large rawhide skins like cow or buffalo you will need a large container. If your neighbor has a swimming pool that will work just fine just use necessary precautions. Actually you can use a large plastic trash can just keep pushing the hide down until is fully submerged. This may take a few hours. The thicker the hide the longer it will take to fully relax. Some ideas on working with rawhide.
Fitness. Snowshoe walking is more difficult than walking on a cleared surface but it is also as hard as you want to make it. Start gradually and progress to a more challenging pace as you get more miles on your snowshoes. Every workout should begin with a gradual warm-up and finish with a cool down to avoid injuries or soreness. End your adventure with a few stretches for the legs hips and arms before hopping back into your car. Where to Go Safely. You can pretty much snowshoe anyplace that you can hike. Check your local tourism office or hiking club for ideas to get you started. Stick to well known snowshoeing trails and always snowshoe with a buddy for safety reasons. Always leave word of your route and carry a cell phone for emergency contact.
