Minnesota winters are filled with activities and festivals celebrating the season! There are so many reasons to plan a Minnesota winter vacation that the only difficulty is deciding what to do first. From ice fishing to snowmobiling and a dozen other activities the entire family will enjoy the experience. While some folks prefer the rush of the wind on their faces as they race along the 1200 miles of snowmobile trails which interconnect rural communities in the Breezy Point area others prefer to experience the quiet natural setting at a more sedate pace by gliding along beautifully groomed ski trails or striking out into the pristine forests with a set of snowshoes strapped to their feet.
From the time I was little Ive always loved the outdoors. I grew up in a family where appreciation for natures beauty was a value drilled into us nearly as often as "Say please. My name is Brian Hughes and my wife Bec and I are the founders of Tuckerman Outfitters LLC. When we started this business we saw it as a chance to share our love of nature with other outdoor enthusiasts like you. Were passionate about adventurous living and we hope you are too. In short Tuckerman Outfitters isnt just our business; its personal. We care about the outdoors and we care about you. Thats reflected in the products we offer and the level of service we provide. We love helping others to enjoy natures gifts just as we do.
One of the important aspects of snowshoes is good flotation which prevents them from tiring out prematurely. Quality snowshoes will have a good hinge that pivots correctly to prevent the tail of the snowshoe from lifting. This leads to good flotation. You also want to be able to have good control of your snowshoes. With any of the quality snowshoes on the market this should never be an issue. If you are into winter outdoor activities you are also going to have a need for ice cleats. Again it is worth taking the time to choose the types of cleats that are more applicable to the outdoor activities you plan on participating in. For example one big benefit of using ice cleats is the ability to prevent the wear and tear that is often created on your ski boots. These are inexpensive items and well worth the investment.
Along with the recent popularity of snowshoeing technology has stepped up and designed and manufactured more durable and lightweight snowshoes. Snowshoes have come a long way since the wooden framed rawhide-laced versions worn by Inuits and Native Americans. If you want to try snowshoeing check with local ski rental shops where you plan to snowshoe. Most will have snowshoes for rent. This is a good way to see if this is a sport you want to get into. The experts in the rental shops should be able to offer advice on size and type of snowshoes to rent. Along with the snowshoes they will fit you with appropriate sized poles that will come in handy during your hike. You should also have a good pair of insulated winter boots and gaiters (gaiters fit over your pants and boot tops) to keep your feet warm and dry. Start off by practicing walking with your snowshoes on near the trailhead until you feel comfortable and ready to venture out. Take it slow and conserve energy by keeping your feet close to the snow so youre almost shuffling along.
