The sales of snowshoes is up because people are putting greater emphasis on fitness outdoor cross training and family recreation. The popularity of back country sporting in recent years like skiing snowboarding and ice climbing is also helping to promote strong snowshoe sales. Snowshoes for sale vary from shorter wider shoes to longer narrow shoes. Materials of these snowshoes are generally lightweight aluminum rubber and durable plastic. Womens snowshoes and kids snowshoes are of varied shapes. For example beaver tail snowshoes are shaped like a tennis racket and bear paw snowshoes are oval shaped. These shapes enable the snowshoer to lift up the shoes weight easily.
Look for fleshing cuts on the back side of the skin when laying out your pattern. These thin areas can break through when the rawhide is drying. Also brands can be a problem. Darker rawhide is stronger than light lighter spots usually have a higher fat content and can be weaker. A thought for drum makers. I have cut my pattern out while the rawhide is dry then soak just that piece. If you do decide to soak the whole skin and either have scraps left over or find you do not have time to work with the rawhide right away just place it in a plastic bag and freeze. Thaw out in water or room temperature to use again. Do not take out and forget it it will begin to spoil after a couple of days.
Snowshoes as the name implies are footwears for walking over snow. Snowshoes distribute the weight of a person over a larger area so that the persons foot does not sink completely into the snow. Traditional snowshoes are made of heavy hardwood frame with leather lacings. Modern high-tech snowshoes are made of light metal such as aluminum and alloy or even of plastic. These modern snowshoes are raised at the toe for maneuverability and are generally smaller than the traditional snowshoes. Racing snowshoes and gliding snowshoes are just some examples of modern snowshoes used for movement in deep snow. Snowshoes were used some 6000 years ago as an earliest form of transportation.
They are lightweight first and foremost to make your feet as light as possible. They are also typically quite small with a minimal amount of cleats. Finally running snowshoes also typically have a spring-loaded suspension system of some kind so that they dont flop around too much and get in the way of your running gait. Finally you should know that most snowshoes are gender specific. There are a few snowshoes out there that are unisex but many that you will find are meant for one gender or the other. Besides aesthetics the main difference between male and female snowshoes is the size. Women tend to weigh less and need less weight displaced and so womens snowshoes dont need to be as big as mens. So smaller men are perfectly able to wear womens snowshoes just as long as they dont mind the more feminine paint job of most womens snowshoes.
