Snowshoes like many useful human inventions are based on the adaptations seen in nature. Animals that live in cold and snowy climates such as the snowshoe hare and the snow leopard often have oversized feet. It is their feet that allow them to move quickly and efficiently over snow without becoming mired down. The additional distributes the animals weight over a larger area preventing the feet from sinking very far. Snowshoes operate on exactly the same concept and they are just as effective. Humans have used snowshoes for thousands of years to aid in survival; today however they are popular primarily as a form of recreation.
This is the best way to fully relax rawhide. It does not ruin the machine or the hide. Just dont use hot water! Once the skin is soft enough close the lid and let the wash machine go through its cycles on a cold rinse. If your machine is not big enough go to the local Laundromat and use the commercial machine. People will look at you funny tell them it is a new type of material used to deflect bullets and is being considered for use by the military. On large rawhide skins like cow or buffalo you will need a large container. If your neighbor has a swimming pool that will work just fine just use necessary precautions. Actually you can use a large plastic trash can just keep pushing the hide down until is fully submerged. This may take a few hours. The thicker the hide the longer it will take to fully relax. Some ideas on working with rawhide.
Short days and long winter nights mean hibernation mode has arrived for many of us. But the start of our grey season does not mean you have to turn into a sloth and put your metabolism to sleep until spring. Not sure what to do this winter? Here is a great activity that you should book into your fitness plan this year: Snowshoeing. This winter activity is making a comeback in the recreation world and snowshoe technology has made leaps and bounds over the past decade. With new lightweight materials todays snowshoes will probably feel a lot different to you then they did when you first tried them during family outings as a child.
They are lightweight first and foremost to make your feet as light as possible. They are also typically quite small with a minimal amount of cleats. Finally running snowshoes also typically have a spring-loaded suspension system of some kind so that they dont flop around too much and get in the way of your running gait. Finally you should know that most snowshoes are gender specific. There are a few snowshoes out there that are unisex but many that you will find are meant for one gender or the other. Besides aesthetics the main difference between male and female snowshoes is the size. Women tend to weigh less and need less weight displaced and so womens snowshoes dont need to be as big as mens. So smaller men are perfectly able to wear womens snowshoes just as long as they dont mind the more feminine paint job of most womens snowshoes.
